Importance of Vitamin D.

It is that time of year again where we start to say good-bye to the sunshine and on goes the central heating and hibernation mode generally kicks in. This normally coincides with several bouts of common colds and leaves us feeling pretty glum as we settle into Autumn. One Vitamin in particular we hear lots about this time of year is Vitamin D- otherwise known as the sunshine vitamin! It is called this because it is produced in your skin in response to sunlight. When we have limited days of sunshine through the winter months, our bodies can easily become deficient in Vitamin D. Symptoms such as fatigue, poor mood, bone loss and re-occurring colds/infections are just some of the signs of possible Vitamin D deficiency. This vital vitamin is essential for a healthy working immune system as well as assisting with maintenance of strong bones and teeth. Let's not forget about Vitamin K2. Vitamin D helps the body to absorb calcium and Vitamin K2 assists in guiding calcium to the teeth and bones where it belongs. This helps to prevent calcium from settling in the soft tissues and causing vascular calcification. So wrap up well, enjoy those autumnal windy walks and don't forget your Vitamin D3/K2 supplement!!
